RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch – count the number of seabirds in your area

RSPB Big School Birdwatch - count the number of seabirds in your area

RSPB’s Big Schools' Birdwatch is a simple bird survey for pupils to take part in and enjoy together. This activity is about counting the number of seabirds in your local area, whether that be ones that visit the school grounds or ones you could visit on a school trip. The results also contribute to RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch – the world's largest wildlife and citizen science survey. The Big Schools Birdwatch is an annual event so make sure you get registered to submit your data.

Are you doing this activity as part of your Wild Challenge? Take a look at your progress and go for gold!

This activity supports the following subjects: Science, Maths.

Step 1

What do I need?

  • You need to register first to take part
  • Binoculars are useful, but not essential

Step 2

What do I do?

  • Choose an hour time slot during the first half of the spring term. This could be a lunchtime, after school or lesson.
  • During this hour, record the birds you see at your site. Record the maximum number of birds you see at any one time.
  • Submit your results on the Big Schools’ Birdwatch website at rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch
  • Back in the classroom, you could use the data collected to create graphs and link to maths learning. You could also link to science and discuss what birds you saw and how that might be related to the habitat offered by the site.
  • Don't forget to tell us when you have completed the activity! When you mark the activity as complete, you will be asked to upload a photo or graph to help earn your award.

Step 3

Completing the activity

Use the 'Mark as complete' button at the top of the Wild Challenge Award activity page to tell RSPB you've completed your activity. You'll need to show what you did it by uploading a photo of your Big Schools’ Birdwatch certificate hanging proudly in your school; or a graph of your schools’ results; photos of children taking part or any other work your school produced.

Step 4

Get them thinking

Here are some prompts to help with learning:

  • Which birds are you expecting to see and why?
  • How will you record your survey?
