Create your own Biodiversity Action Plan

It’s important to know which habitats and wildlife are present in your school grounds, but it’s equally important to know what’s missing and how to help. This activity is about creating an action plan to increase the biodiversity and homes for nature on your school site. It’s a great way to apply knowledge, use investigative skills, put science into action, and have ownership of a project that will make a tangible difference to the wildlife living on the school grounds.

What do I do?

  • Plan and carry out an investigation into the biodiversity of the school grounds. What homes for nature do you already have? Your discoveries from the other activities such as habitat explorers and bioblitz will help.
  • Use the Nature Scorecards to help you assess your findings. A great way to bring science to life!
  • Think about how you could increase the biodiversity by applying your knowledge of habitats. What are your school grounds are missing in terms of homes for nature?
  • Think about what you could do to make more homes for nature. Write a plan of what you are going to do, how you are going to do it and when by – a Biodiversity Action Plan.
  • You could implement the plan then carry out another investigation at a later date. Use the Nature Scorecards to see if your Biodiversity score has increased.
  • Don't forget to tell us when you have completed your Biodiversity Action Plan! When you mark the activity as complete, you will be asked to upload a copy of your plan to help earn your award.
