Writing and implementing your biosecurity plan
This page provides guidance and advice on how to protect your island from invasive non-native species by creating a biosecurity plan.
There are three main sections in a biosecurity plan: Prevention, surveillance and incursion response.
Simple prevention actions, barriers, can be put in place quickly to reduce the risk of non-native species reaching the island. To do so you need to identify the native species that are at risk, identify and involve island stakeholders, identify the non-native species that pose the greatest risk and consider the pathways by which these species could reach the island. Once you have this information barriers can be identified and implemented. Take a look at the resources listed to the right for guidance and advice on how to do this.
The next stage: head to the resource sections for 'surveillance' and 'incursion response' for the next sections of your plan
Here we give an overview of the most important term sin biosecurity including; - Surveillance (ongoing and intensive) - Incursion response
Use this template to write your biosecurity plan. It has the relevant sections you need and is a very handy tool to ensure you have a robust plan.
This document provides examples of pathways and barriers which can therefore be put in place, giving you a starting place to write your preventions actions.
Biosecurity involves the efforts of every stakeholder of the island (boat operators, tourists, businesses on island or delivering good to the island, community members)
The main aim of the prevention plan is to prevent (re)incursion events by identifying barriers you can place along pathways to obstruct the movement of invasive species.
Here you need to identify and describe characteristics of the island that will affect biosecurity measures.
