Module 3

Food or Foe Game - Snakes and ladders with a twist! (30mins)

Learning can be fun!

Or so the children from Small Isles and Raasay Primary think. They have designed a fabulous game based on Snakes and Ladders to help you learn about biosecurity. The aim is to collect as many eggs as possible by answering questions correctly and avoid falling down the board when you meet a predator. This game can be played at any age but is aimed at lower primary.

This game was invented by pupils from Raasay Primary, Scotland

Module 3

Food or Foe Game - Snakes and ladders with a twist! (30mins)

Step 1

Aim of the Game

You are a seabird, looking for a safe nesting site. You’ve got to try to avoid predators which have arrived by boat onto your island. Can you make it to your nest before you’ve lost your eggs

Step 2

Set Up

To see this game on a full screen, please visit http://rspb.focusgames.com

You can play this game as a whole class in 2-4 teams on your whiteboard or as a small group 2-4 players

Each player starts with 3 egg tokens, a seabird counter. The teacher has answers to the questions and can give out or take away egg tokens

Step 3

Playing the Game

Youngest goes first. Roll the dice and your counter will move the same number of dots shown, following the numbers on the squares.

Each square you land on, you will need to answer one question. If you get it right you will gain an egg for your team.

If you land on the bottom of a seabird then you go up it and gain an egg.

If you land on the head of a predator (pine martin, rat, mouse etc) then you go down it and lose one of your precious eggs

The player sitting on your left has the next turn.

Step 4

Winning the Game

The winner is the team that has the most eggs when everyone reaches the end nest
